Alright, so let's say a vaccine has a 90% chance of protecting you from some disease when you're exposed to it- no vaccine is perfect, after all. If you alone get it, you're 90% protected. Your odds are 1 in 10 of getting this disease. Now let's say everyone gets this vaccine. Because the entire population has 90% protection, you're even safer, because you'll come into contact with 90% fewer infected people. Your odds become 1 in 100. This has a snowball effect, where everyone becomes better protected as a result of everyone else getting vaccinated, and as a result, you yourself pose less risk to those around you. It's called Herd Immunity, and it means that everyone protects you, and you protect them. If you are unvaccinated and haven't gotten sick, that's herd immunity - you're welcome. But you are benefitting from this without contributing to it. You're the medical equivalent of a welfare cheat.
